The installed capacity for the production of electricity started at 260 MW, having been the target of a power increase that allowed to expand the project's capacity to 520 megawatts (MW) (since 10/15/2012), with two reversible generator sets. , which should produce 381 gigawatt hour (GWh) annually. The reservoir reaches, at the maximum level, 250 km², being then the largest artificial lake in Western Europe.It was built with the aim of irrigating the entire Alentejo area and producing electricity, in addition to other complementary activities. Several infrastructures of the global system are already built (Pedrógão dam, infrastructure 12, Aldeia da Luz) and many others at an advanced stage of the project.In October 2012, the Alqueva Dam Power Reinforcement came into service, consisting of a new plant with two reversible generator sets, each with 130 MW of power, doubling the installed power of the Dam.At the beginning of 2015, between public and private investment, the Alqueva irrigation project has already mobilized € 4 billion, to which another € 1,000 million will be added until 2020, namely boosted by support from the European Commission.
