Human beings depend on the balance of ecosystems to survive, and Costa Rica plays a vital role in global ecological protection. Although it covers only 51,000 square kilometers, the country is home to more than 500,000 species, protects 26% of its territory, and represents about 6% of the world’s biodiversity. This richness is due to its location between the Caribbean and Pacific oceans, serving as a biological bridge between North and South America.

For decades, conservation has been a pillar of sustainable development in Costa Rica. Thirty-five years ago, one family established a conservation project founded on three pillars: Conservation, Research, and Education.

The Reserve is a rainforest and cloud forest sanctuary located along Costa Rica’s Continental Divide, at elevations between 1,500 and 2,000 meters. It forms a biological corridor between Poás Volcano National Park and Juan Castro Blanco Aquatic National Park and is conveniently located near San José and the international airport. The property covers 385 hectares and features rivers, waterfalls, and more than 15 kilometers of forest trails, creating an exceptional habitat for biodiversity.

Since 2004, the Reserve has hosted the internationally recognized Dr. Stephen H. Kirby Orchid Garden, with a laboratory and herbarium of approximately 250 classified orchid species found exclusively on the property. Scientific research conducted with the University of Costa Rica and Lankester Botanical Gardens has earned international recognition.

The Reserve protects hundreds of bird species and a wide diversity of mammals, including jaguars, tapirs, and monkeys. Facilities include a boutique eco-hotel with 10 rooms, a restaurant, meeting and research areas, and a terrace ideal for hummingbird observation.
